Community Counts
The Walmart Foundation’s philanthropic activity can be seen both nationally and internationally. The majority of contributions, however, happens on local levels. Here are some of the most recent donations Walmart made to New England charities and organizations.

Boston, MA / June 2011

Walmart announced a $25 million giving campaign to help kids during the summer, of which more than $1 million will be donated to Massachusetts’ organizations.  In an effort to keep American students active physically and mentally during the summer, organizations that will receive money are BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) and YMCA Boston, amongst other nonprofits.  Walmart addresses the issues of nutrition, education and employment opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students.


Taunton, MA / April 2011
Walmart donated $1000 to the Taunton area Pro-Home, a nonprofit that helps provide housing services to thirteen communities in Bristol and Plymouth counties.  Pro-Home helps educate and instruct community members on how to find and maintain affordable housing.

 

Amherst, NH / May 2011
To celebrate their grand reopening, Walmart donated more than $100,000 to various charities in the area, including over $40,000 to the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth.  The other recipients included Girls, Inc., the Nashua Soup Kitchen, New Hampshire Food Bank and various scholarship funds.

 

Hartford, CT / May 2011
Walmart has embarked on a $2 billion commitment, over five years, in an effort to address hunger issues across the United States.  Walmart in Connecticut has already made several $100,000 donations to various agencies, including End Hunger Connecticut, Foodshare and Connecticut Food Bank.

 

Warwick, RI / March 2011
Representatives from various Walmarts across the state came together to visit and tour the Sargent Rehabilitation Center, a clinic for children and adults with disabilities.  At the end of the tour, the Walmart representatives presented the center with a $5,000 check to help with their services.

 

Portland, ME / November 2010

The Walmart Foundation donated a $100,000 grant and a new refrigerated food delivery truck to Good Shepherd Food Bank. This contribution was made as part of the Associate Choice Program, an online campaign where Walmart associates vote on which nonprofit organization will receive donations in their home states. The food delivery truck will help Good Shepherd deliver food to over 175,000 residents who are at risk of hunger.

 

Marlborough, MA / October 2010
The Special Olympics of Massachusetts received a $50,000 donation through the Walmart state giving program. Half of the money went toward purchasing medallions which now proudly hang in SOMA’s Training Center. The other half will support SOMA’s program that provides year-round training for athletes.


Salem, MA / November 2010
The Walmart Foundation donated $40,000 to the Salvation Army’s homeless shelter on Front Street in Salem. The shelter now has a new six-burner stove and commercial-size washers and dryers. This was the largest donation ever given to the shelter for repairs, renovations and new equipment.


Weymouth, MA / November 2010
Weymouth Walmart Community Involvement program donated $500 to the children’s room at Tufts Library. According to the librarian, the money was needed to purchase picture books and early reader books. This contribution was a part of Walmart’s commitment of financial support for the programs, services, and collections of the Weymouth Public Libraries.


Hartford, CT / September 2010

Walmart donated a total of $153,000 to the Connecticut-based youth non profits. Connecticut Science Center, dedicated to promoting science interest among youths, received $28,600. $75,000 went to Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, an organization that educates youth in areas of business and financial literacy. First Tee in Rocky Hill received $50,000 to support the organization’s goal of teaching life skills to children through practices of golf.


Manchester, NH / October 2010
This fall, Walmart made a significant contribution to help feed the men and women of New Hampshire. In early October Walmart donated 42 pallets of nutritious foods to stock the shelves of the New Hampshire Food Bank, the only food bank in the state servicing more than 26,000 people each week.


Amherst, NH / September 2010
This year Walmart raised over $3 million in donations to support the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD) and marked the 10th anniversary of the ‘Help a Child Smile’ Golf Tournament. Walmart’s support to CHaD is unique because each store contributes individually by holding bake sales, hosting motorcycle runs, employee lunches, craft fairs, and collecting donations.


Providence, RI / October 2010
WalMart Foundation is partnering with the Providence Bruins to raise money and awareness for nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island to support a wide range of community and social services programs that benefit children, adults, and working families throughout the stat. This includes heating assistance, quality healthcare, after school activites, environmental initiatives, and adult literacy. Together ,the Walmart Foundation and the Providence Bruins made donations to various local organizations: $25,000 to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence’s Keep The Heat On Campaign, $15,000 to youth organization City Year, and $25,000 to Rhode Island YMCA.
